Business Central version 29: what matters for a UK business

Microsoft started rolling out 2026 release wave 2 in October. Here is the short version: the one-click finance pack, a smarter Payables Agent, branded document reports, subcontracting done properly, and the Feature Management switches that just became mandatory.

Microsoft started rolling out Business Central 2026 release wave 2 (version 29) in October. Existing online customers can pick their update date any time up to the end of February 2027. Below is the short version of what has changed, what it means for a UK business, and what to do before your update lands.

Finance and reporting: month-end gets shorter

Multiple financial reports, one PDF. Pick your P&L, balance sheet and cash flow, run them together and send one file to the board. Pair it with automated report outputs, which schedule a report to run and deliver itself, and the pack produces itself on the first of the month.

Audit trail on financial reports. Every change to a financial report definition is now logged, always. You can also trace which reports use a given G/L account before you retire it.

Branded document reports. The new document report experience adds themes, reusable header and footer layouts and conditional visibility in the updated Word add-in. It is off by default in Feature Management, so switch it on in a sandbox first.

Copilot and agents: less reviewing, more trusting

The Payables Agent gets better at matching supplier invoices to purchase orders, including the awkward ones with no tidy order reference. Agent output can be reviewed directly on the page, there is a single task pane for every agent, and permissions are simpler to manage. Agents can also run data queries through the new MCP server. In preview: the Copilot chat experience and the Expense Agent, with VAT calculated from expense reports and mileage by vehicle type.

Manufacturing, warehouse and retail

Subcontracting is much easier to set up, instructions carry through to the purchase order, and inventory put-aways and picks work for subcontracted operations. Direct transfer orders can be posted from warehouse-enabled locations. The Shopify connector gains B2B companies, catalogues and pricing, proper handling of order changes and refunds, and tariff and origin data for customs paperwork.

Feature Management: now mandatory

If an old integration still calls page-based SOAP endpoints, it will stop working on update. Check before, not after.

Before your update lands

  1. Check the update date in the admin centre and move it if it clashes with month-end.
  2. Run your extensions through the version 29 compiler in a sandbox.
  3. Review integrations that use SOAP page endpoints.
  4. Pick one new feature to switch on for the finance team on day one. The one-PDF finance pack is the easy win.
